But even the most robust cactus sometimes needs a little extra attention. That’s why it’s useful to gain some knowledge about pruning your cactus. In this blog, we’ll give you the best tips on how to do this, without leaving you with stings in your hands.

Is pruning a cactus necessary?

Cactus plants are special. Instead of leaves, they have developed spines and hairs. These function not only as protection from animals, but also from the sun. The cactus family (Cactaceae) includes up to 1,500 different species. They originally grow in the Americas, mainly in dry areas. Fun fact: a small number of species are found in tropical rain forests, where they grow on tree branches. Despite large amounts of precipitation, the water there flows away quickly and conditions for the cactus there are dry enough.

On Dutch windowsills do mescaline cacti also do very well. They are easy plants that don’t need much care. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to prune your cactus a little sometimes. This is not only necessary to keep the plant beautiful, it is also very important for the health of your cactus. Sometimes there are parts of the cactus that get sick or are infected by fungus. By pruning, you stimulate growth and can prevent the spread of disease.

The best time to prune

Now when is the best time to prune a mescaline cactus? It is in the spring or early summer. That is the time when a cactus grows the fastest. If you cut off a piece of the plant, it will be able to recover pruning wounds quickly, reducing the chance of infection. To determine the best time, you can also look at the shape of your cactus, places where it is getting too big or when dead segments can be seen. Also, if your mescaline cactus is suffering from an infestation, you can remove an infected section if necessary if control fails.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, spring is the best time to prune cacti because wounds heal faster.
Source: RHS – Caring for cacti

What do I need to prune a cactus?

Is it time to prune your cactus, have the following tools and handy items ready:

Pruning shears or sharp knife

Thick gloves or an oven mitt

Disinfectant

Make sure the pruning shears (or knife) are sharp so you can cut or trim thick sections of a cactus without effort. Gardening gloves help protect your hands from the sharp spines. Before pruning, clean your tools with disinfectant to prevent disease transmission.

Tips for pruning a cactus

Each cactus species differs in how you approach pruning. If you have a columnar cactus, such as the San Pedro, you can cut off the top to encourage branching. With a globular cactus, such as a Peyote, you prune away the small offshoots to keep the mother plant healthy. In a disk cactus, new segments form, which can be removed to maintain the plant’s cohesion. Cut as close to the base of the section you want to remove as possible.

Note that when you cut away a segment, the cactus will bleed. You can limit this by covering the wound with cigarette ash (or other ash). If it is a cactus other than a mescaline cactus, be careful with this juice. It can be toxic (especially if it is an Euphorbia cactus). Therefore, prevent pets and children from touching the wound and consult a doctor if you or anyone else gets this sap in the eyes or has swallowed it.

At first, the pruning area will not be very nice. But the wound will heal, you don’t need to take extra measures for this yourself. Eventually the cactus may branch out at this point. However, this varies by species and it is impossible to predict if this will be the case.

Do you doubt that the pruning went well? Sometimes signs of stress can be seen on a cactus after pruning. Your plant may be discolored or show some sagging. This is usually only temporary. Give your cactus time to recover. However, if you see signs of infection or damage has occurred, try to repair it with proper care. For example, use a special antifungal agent for cacti, such as sulfur powder or a copper-based fungicide, as recommended by garden centers and botanical experts. Do not overwater; this can actually lead to root rot. Place your cactus in a bright spot, but not directly in the sun.

What can you do with the cut off parts?

The nice thing about pruning a cactus is that you can use the cut sections as cuttings. You can do this as follows. You can let the cut piece of cactus dry and then put it in a pot with cactus soil. The piece will start to develop roots, after which another full-fledged cactus can grow from it.

As you can see, pruning a cactus is not very complicated. Cacti are strong plants. Especially when they are still small, pruning is not necessary. Only when certain segments get too big or you want to stimulate growth, you can intervene. If you do it the right way, you can enjoy these wonderful and unique plants in your windowsill for a long time to come.

If you have a beautiful mescaline cactus in your windowsill, then you know that these plants don’t require much maintenance.
