Tripping is not only possible on shrooms and truffles but also on harmless-looking Mescaline cacti. The best known are San Pedro and Peyote. These Mexican plants are used in spiritual ceremonies, but are also a great pastime recreationally. Read all about Mescaline cacti such as Peyote and San Pedro here. What can you use them for and how do you go about it?
What are Mescaline cacti?
Mescaline cacti are found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The two best-known species are San Pedro and Peyote. Less well known is the Bolivian Torch, considered one of the strongest cacti. They look like any other cactus. However, these species contain psychoactive compounds, which therefore cause you to trip. One such substance is the alkaloid mescaline, from which the cacti thus got their name.
The great thing about Mescaline cacti is that they do just fine in your living room. If you want to use San Pedro or Peyote, you have them at your fingertips. Like many cactus species, Peyote grows at a pretty slow pace. In the end, this species does not grow very large: count on a ball of 12 centimeters. You can also raise the San Pedro yourself. However, this cactus does grow fast. Where the Peyote has a spherical shape, San Pedro shoots up into the air. And big too: they can grow up to 6 meters tall, with a diameter of up to 15 centimeters.
What exactly are mescaline cacti used for?
Mescaline cacti have been used for centuries by indigenous tribes for spiritual and healing purposes. They believe they enable you to contact the gods and ancestors. During a trip, you gain life lessons and insights; in other words, a true spiritual journey. Both past and present, cacti are also used to deal with trauma.
San Pedro has been used since at least the 16th century and today is mostly found in traditional ceremonies in Peru. Peyote use can even be seen in cave paintings thousands of years old. They were probably also used ceremonially before that time, but no hard evidence has been found for that (yet).
The effects of San Pedro and Peyote
San Pedro and Peyote are trip aids that can blow you away pretty badly. They have the ability to make you hallucinate and give you visions. Certainly Peyote will give you an intense trip. You must be ready to be put in touch with your ancestors and random entities or see the world around you change completely. With a maximum dose, you can count on complete ego death. A trip lasts about 6 to 12 hours, or even 24 hours if you take a hefty dose. The intensity of your trip depends on the dose, among other things, as well as your mood, company and environment. So really make sure it’s right on all those fronts before you embark on a mescaline trip.
Dosage and use Mescaline cacti: San Pedro and Peyote
Have you grown your own Mescaline cacti, and is it time to harvest and trip? Then, of course, you want to know how many of these plantains you need and how to prepare it. We warn you in advance: the dosage is tricky. In fact, mescaline levels can be nearly 10 times higher in one cactus than another. And you can’t tell with the naked eye how potent it is.
Therefore, on your cactus’ first trip, go for a safe test drive. The risk is that you may not notice anything or very little, but that is small distress compared to overdosing.
A small dose of an average Peyote cactus is about 15-30 grams, in dried form. Go for a smaller portion of under 10 grams the first time. In the next session, increase the dose incrementally if you feel too little of it. The dosage of San Pedro is different: here you need about 150 grams of it.
Specific instructions apply to the preparation of Mescaline cacti. For example, you need to boil San Pedro, while Peyote needs to be dried. If you want to know how to extract the mescaline from your San Pedro cactus, read these instructions for cooking San Pedro carefully. If you are tripping on Peyote, you can here read how to get from cactus to powder.
