But you can also grow your own mescaline cactus with this. The same can be done with seeds or cuttings of one of these cactus species.
San Pedro seeds: choose the strain you want to grow
The San Pedro family consists of several strains, which differ slightly in composition among themselves. You can compare it to strains of cannabis plants. All strains get you high, but as a user you may have certain preferences.
Here's how to grow your mescaline cactus from seed to plant
If you go for cactus seeds to grow your San Pedro or Peyote with, you will need a grow box, potting soil and grow pots.
- Make sure you work with sterile soil. You can buy this, but you can also sterilize it yourself by pouring boiling water over it. On the other hand, this will flush out healthy nutrients. You can also buy cactus soil at the garden center.
- Time to sow! Choose pots that do not hold water but have one or more holes in the bottom. Fill pots or growing trays half full of soil and place the seeds on top. Cover these again with a very thin layer of soil, which you do not press down.
- Place the pots on a saucer so that you can put water in them, which the soil will then soak up. Remove the pots from the saucers when the top of the soil feels sticky. This will prevent the seeds from drowning. The potting soil should remain moist, but not too.
- Besides moisture, mescaline cacti love heat and sunlight, so you need to see that facilitated when growing them. A grow box helps with that. These can be very simple; just a translucent plastic container that warms up from the sun in your windowsill. Or just cover the pots with plastic wrap. No sun? Then use grow lights.
- Give your plantlets a fresh gulp of air and a few hours of direct sunlight every day.
- Wait patiently for at least two weeks. After this, you may notice the first signs of new cacti.
- After several months (yes, months!) you can carefully repot the baby cacti with roots and all. Do not do so until it is at least 1 centimeter in diameter more not. Officially, your cactus is mature when it is one year old.
Fertilizing and continuing to grow your own Peyote cactus
If you have a Peyote in your home, you can get seeds for new cacti from it yourself. A week after you have watered it, it will grow flowers. These contain pistils with pollen, which you can gently touch to self-fertilize your cactus. The fruits that then come out of this contain the seeds that you can plant again for offspring.
Can’t wait that long for seeds to mature? Then go for a cutting of our mescaline cacti.
